JOB DESCRIPTION
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To be a key member of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) core research team solving real world problems for the Irish Pharmaceutical Industry. Through its extensive industry network, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) conducts innovative, high quality, relevant research in pharmaceutical manufacturing that has direct relevance to industry. The successful candidate will be part of the PMTC multidisciplinary team, and be based in the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science & Industry (MACSI) group (www.macsi.ul.ie) at the University of Limerick. He/she will be expected to interact with other PMTC researchers and will enjoy significant exposure to industry partners. He/she will take responsibility for data modelling and issues of mutual interest to PMTC industry partners.
Responsibilities include:
- Building sustainable mathematical and soft sensor models to understand critical industrial processes.
- Short-term, high exposure engagement with industry on rapid-turnaround (1 week-3month) projects, including managing the industrial interaction and securing funding for follow-up work.
- Supporting PMTC researchers in other disciplines and building a centre core competence in statistical modelling.
- Publishing research of interest to both the pharmaceutical industry and academia in peer-review journals.
Typical projects are expected to focus on the development of algorithms for closed-loop predictive control, driven by statistical tools and mathematical models of the underlying physics/chemistry driving the process. These algorithms will be developed and tested using real data from a variety of critical pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The role provides a wide variety of challenges and unique exposure to multiple pharmaceutical partners in Ireland.
