Hi Bethan,
We don't have any glass plates so I can't comment on their digitisation. However, all our other 2D flat copy work is almost entirely camera based now. We use a Hasselblad/Phase combo for 'objects' and a Nikon D600 for 'non-object' copy work such as slides of objects using an LED lightbox and an old DeVere enlarger.

Main reason is speed. Dust from sensors etc is considered to be a known risk.

Subject: Scanning Equipment

Dear All

We are currently looking at refreshing equipment with in the department, I'm keen to find out what people now use to digitise 2D Flat works. Typically we digitise flat work smaller then A3 on a Fuji Llanovia C550 flat bed scanner. Mostly for Glass plates, Large format Transparencies and Photographs / Letters. Also a Nikon super cool scan 5000 is in use for 35mm Negatives and Slides.

I would like to know your opinion as to what method is preferred in using certain equipment for certain material and if you can recommend any specific models or even use a camera set up for time efficiency.

In my opinion, I believe Glass plates are perfectly acceptable to use on a Llanovia flat bed, I haven't found an alternative piece of equipment that has been able to capture the quality better. If there is a better way please do get in touch.

It would be great to hear from others.

Thank you for your time.

Beth
