SPINNING OUT: guidance and free training events rom The National Archives
The National Archives has launched new guidance designed to help the archive sector make informed decisions about the future of their archive services and collections. We are also running two free seminars in September and October to accompany the guidance.
GUIDANCE
In recent years, the trend for heritage, library and archive services to convert to charitable trusts, social enterprises, mutual, local authority trading companies or a transfer to community management has increased. This conversion is commonly known as 'spinning out'.
In a spin: guidance on spinning out local authority archive services, has been developed to support local authority archive services and their managers and funders in making informed decisions about the future of their archive services and collections. It outlines different models for service spin-outs and their implications for archive services. It also highlights key regulatory considerations and alternative options. The guidance stresses the importance of considering what is best for individual archives and includes case studies of spin-outs that are in the process of being launched.
We will update the guidance regularly, drawing on the experiences of authorities setting up new spin-outs and of the spin-outs themselves.

FREE TRAINING SEMINARS
Venue and dates
Session 1. Introduction to Spinning Out Archive Services: Friday 12 September 2014
Session 2. Planning to Spin Out Archive Services: Wednesday 22 October 2014
The National Archives, London
Event purpose and course outline
The training events are designed for archive managers, directors and assistant directors responsible for archives; project managers of archive spin-outs.
The financial pressures facing local authorities mean that the future of every service is under review. For many archive services, the pressure on their funding means that radical alternatives are being considered, including 'spinning out' the service to an arms-length or independent body.
Following the publication of 'In a Spin', The National Archives' guidance on spinning out archive services, we have organised two training events:
* Session 1: an introduction to spinning out.
* Session 2: an in-depth planning session on spin-outs.
In each session, we explore the strategic implications of spinning out an archive service and the practical steps needed to make it happen. We also examine case studies and give you the chance to hear from those who have embarked on spinning out so that you can explore what it might mean for your service - and whether it's a route that is right for you.
Session 1: Introduction
In this one-day session, we explore why authorities are considering spinning out their archive services and the alternatives. We examine the different types of spin-out and their implications - and how to ensure that the needs of the archive service inform the decision-making process. We will hear from a speaker on why they span out their archive service and have a chance to discuss their experience with them. We'll then go on to plan your next steps in deciding whether spinning out is right for you and hear about the help that is on offer.
This session is particularly suitable for those who want to understand whether spinning out might be a realistic option for them and what's involved.
Session 2: Planning
Our second session is aimed at those already planning - or in the middle of implementing - a spin-out model. We look at the whole process of spinning out, while focusing on ensuring the sustainability and future success of the archive service. We will work through the critical success factors and enable participants to conduct a 'health check' on their spin-out project. We will hear from a speaker who has experienced the whole process of spinning out an archive service and examine the key lessons. We will then work with you to confirm your key lessons for the day and the next steps.
This session would suit anyone in the middle of spinning out their archive service as well as those nearing completion. It will also be valuable for those about to embark on the process who want to understand in detail what's involved.
Our Trainers
The training sessions will be delivered by Eric Bohl and Andrew Holden of the Activist Group. Eric and Andrew were co-authors of 'In a Spin', The National Archives guidance on spinning out archive services.
