MUSICultures: Call for Papers
MUSICultures solicits articles for publication in a special issue on
Music and Tourism, guest edited by Dr. Jessica Roda (with the Canada
Research Chair in urban heritage, UQAM) and Dr. Monique Desroches
(Université de Montréal). We also continue to solicit articles on any
topic related to our mandate.
As argued by Dean MacCannell (1976), Nelson Graburn (2002) and Edward
Bruner (2005), there is a need to go beyond the discourse of the
"corrupting impact" of tourism (Demanget and Kervran 2010). This would
allow for a better understanding of the complicity of power and the
complex relationships at play between "the visitor and the visited," as
well as contribute to an understanding of how culture can be mobilized,
not only as an economic resource, but also as political, social and
identity-based resources. This special issue will explore the processes
and effects of the intersection between musical practices and tourism by
examining, first and foremost, the music in question, as well as
performers, audiences and settings. We invite proposals addressing
various types of tourism - whether mass, cultural, roots, "dark,"
religious, alternative, rural or urban tourism - with the aim of digging
deeper into tourism's juncture with music, in both local and global
settings, including music exported to the international stage as part of
festivals; in the context of sporting, political and commemorative
events; in museums; or even in virtual spaces.
