ASA14 Decennial, Edinburgh, 19-22 June. A message from the ASA's Chair, Veronica Strang
A record number of delegates - more than 700 - attended the ASA's Decennial Conference in Edinburgh at the end of June. The STAR consortium, and in particular the conference convenors and their support teams, should be heartily congratulated for organising an intellectually outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable event. On behalf of all of our members, the ASA would like to thank them for their hard work and commitment, and for an exemplary conference. During the conference, the ASA's Anthropology Matters network held a useful meeting, to discuss its journal and to explore ways in which the ASA can support postgraduates (see below). There was also a HoDs meeting, on 22 June, in which there was discussion of responses to HEFCE's review of metrics in research evaluation, strategies for engagement with UK funding bodies, and issues concerning the anthropology A Level.
Anthropology Matters at ASA14
Anthropology Matters is the ASA's postgraduate network. It involves an active mailing list and an online open-access journal. This year’s ASA annual conference hosted a lunchtime meeting of this network. During the meeting, an Anthropology Matters journal editor introduced the network and invited participants to submit their work to the journal as well as to take part in its editorial process, which is based on strictly volunteered work by postgraduates and early career scholars. The meeting was very well attended and was an opportunity for many to learn about the Anthropology Matters editorial process, ask questions and discuss aspects of the journal and the network with one of the journal editors. Postgraduates and early career scholars who were not able to attend the meeting but would like to get involved in the editorial process can get in touch with the Anthropology Matters editors, Carna Brkovic and Ainhoa Montoya, on [log in to unmask]

Call for papers - Anthropology in Action special issue on impact of anthropology
Anthropology in Action is an international peer-reviewed journal publishing articles, commentaries, research reports, and book reviews in applied anthropology. Contributions reflect the use of anthropological training in policy- or practice-oriented work and foster the broader application of these approaches to practical problems. The journal provides a forum for debate and analysis for anthropologists working both inside and outside academia and aims to promote communication amongst practitioners, academics and students of anthropology in order to advance the cross-fertilisation of expertise and ideas.
In a range of countries, the public 'value' of and support for a range of academic disciplines has been questioned and debated. Following the recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise in the UK, which introduced formal assessment of 'research impact', it is timely to reflect on the engagement of anthropology with public policy and practice and how it makes an impact on these spheres. We invite submissions of articles and comment or debate pieces or other contributions reflecting on the issue of 'impact' including questions such as: how do we define and measure impact? How do anthropologists engage with public policy and discourse in order to make an impact? Contributions are welcome from any country.
Contributions will be reviewed by editorial board members and selected for inclusion in the first issue of the journal for 2015. This issue will follow on shortly from the announcement of the results of the UK REF exercise. The closing date for submissions to the special issue will be 30th September 2014. However, articles and commentaries on this theme are always welcomed, so contributions submitted later will also be considered for publication.
