Just for completeness regarding the Matlab path and SPM:
To make sure to have the Matlab path been set properly with respect to the SPM subdirectories, I suggest the following procedure: First, remove everything except the SPM root folder from the path, i.e. keep /home/katie/spm8 ; and then start SPM once to force it adding all the subdirectories. Finally, you can check the Matlab path again and store it permanently.
Using this way, you avoid that any subdirectory is missing. (We once had the problem that this occured and the basic IO menu/functions were missing in the SPM batch system!)
However, if you work with different Matlab versions, I suggest to store the path information in the startup.m file in your home folder in order to add the SPM folders to your Matlab path one-by-one, i.e. containing commands such as addpath('/home/katie/spm8'). Otherwise, you will hardcode all the Matlab version-specific toolbox pathes in your pathdef.m, which may cause problems when using different Matlab versions or you might miss new toolboxes that are installed after you created this file...

Martin
