Hi Andrew,
personally, I think it is ridiculous in this day and age that publishers
are charging us these amounts for color figures. With most everyone now
either getting the PDF files directly, or after reading the paper
version (if they liked the paper, that is :) I am usually disinclined to
spend much time optimizing my figure for B/W printouts, and I respect it
if others do the same thing.
I know this is not very helpful but I thought I'd say it anyway :)
