Hi,
I am based near (just south of) Birmingham. I have a Ruben's tube you'd be welcome to look at, but perhaps that's a bit too much of a trek.
To be honest, they're not too tricky, the only non-trivial bit I found was getting a tap and die large enough to thread a hole that would accept the brass hose nozzle I used to attach to the gas supply. Really you would want to split the gas and have it enter the tube at two or three points to get a more even flame, but I got fed up of drilling myself :)
I did originally use a flashback arrestor because of very strict health-and-safety where I used to be, but that really is overkill, if you're using propane you should be good right out of the regulator - just prime the tube well before you light it and don't let anyone stand near the edges in case it does ignite in the tube and blowout.
Cheers,
Nic
