Hi Nick,

For the British Columbia Open Textbook Project we are using a publishing platform called Pressbooks. It is built on WordPress. We are hosting our own instance, which is a bit tricky to set up. However,  there is also a hosted option at http://pressbooks.com. We've been contributing code to this project.

Cheers,

Hi folks

I've had an enquiry from an academic colleague who is hosting an Erasmus summer school for which student groups have to produce a research paper to gain credits; there is a commitment to provide a repository (sic) for the student work that is open access...they had apparently intended to host the work on a dedicated website but are thinking about the possibility of publishing as an ebook with an isbn.

I am aware of http://www.lulu.com/ which might be a suitable solution and was used I think by certain well known oer-ers for Into the Wild - http://publications.cetis.ac.uk/2012/601

I've also been pointed at booktype - http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/booktype/ - but I think it needs to be installed on a web-server which is probably more involved than my colleague would like for this project.

Any other suggestions/advice?

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nick,

For the e-book side of things we used https://www.smashwords.com/about/how_to_publish_on_smashwords to publish a number of titles as OER. Smashwords provide style guidelines and if you stick to them the upload is fairly painless. They will also help push content out through various platforms if you add a reference to them. Not sure how it would stack up against the other options you mention - but it worked for us.

Cheers,

Steve

We used Research-publishing.net, a very small-scale academic publisher.

You can see our book at http://research-publishing.net/publications/2013-beaven-comas-quinn-sawhill/
