Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Asbestos Regs 2012
Hi,
Fire fighters used to be specifically exempted from the asbestos regs as it was felt that they did not meet the criteria to be asbestos workers.
As I understand it the Fire Services are waiting for the HSE to confirm whether they are still exempted under the newer regs. We are waiting for their view but as it stands no changes have been made to current routine medical assessments and it is likely that they will be exempted.
If they are not exempted then under the regs they will need to be seen by an asbestos acredited doctor every 2 years who willl need to listen to their chest. Not a good idea in my view as will not pick up any asbestos related illness and a waste of resources but we wait for the HSE to confirm either way.
Louise
