...and furthering ones' one career Shaun, lets not forget.

After all, we all know that the summer is used for writing, not being interrupted by emails discussing the deaths of people We don't care about.

I'm sorry but it seems to me shocking that there are any media scholars whose reaction to a relatively rare moment when MECSSA's mail-list has had some real connection to matters of current(urgent) political importance, is to threaten to unsubscribe.

To be frank, it also strikes me as dangerously close to the kind of indulgent positions academics are often accused of occupying, to threaten to disengage from a live debate - in favour of a safe and deferred event in a closed space?

As Joanne Knowles makes clear below - if people are actually upset by the presence of this debate in the list, then just do it - unsubscribe.

The intrusion of the political into our comfortable and very safe lives, is often messy, ungoverned and a bit threatening - thankfully! it also should be inevitable. What are we for if not to active encourage and participate in debates like this.

Back to reviewing articles no-one else has read on theories no one really cares about

Jo, I really could not agree with you more – very well said! In my view, we really need to follow up this debate with a serious examination of what it actually signifies.

Best, Julian.

Subject: Re: UNSUBSCRIBE

To all those sending messages that they wish to unsubscribe: this can be done without sending emails to the list and compounding the problem of email traffic. It might be instructive to (re) read the instructions on how this and other email distribution lists operate.

As well as the general interest of the discussion taking place, I’ve been interested to note the frequent references made by those who dislike the Gaza discussion to the ‘more appropriate place’ where such discussions should be happening. If anyone should find this utopian location where social and political discussion can be conducted without the slightest hint of inconvenience, dissent or offence ever being caused to anyone, please let me know where I can find it. In the meantime, thanks to Gabriel Moreno for attempting to facilitate making a space available for (no doubt imperfect) discussions to take place.

An earlier respondent wrote of their wish to keep this email list free of the political discussions (and the tone of those discussions) that had dominated their other social media feeds. As a cultural studies scholar I do not wish to see my professional life as something entirely separate from day-to-day social and political concerns and the impact of world events. It’s been eye-opening to see how differently people can feel about this. Like most others, I often receive messages from the MECCSA list that do not personally interest me. It’s never been more than a moment’s trouble to hit the delete key. What a pity that either silencing or moving a whole topic of serious discussion seems in some views to be the preferred solution.

Please count me out, too. I think these discussions are way too sensitive to conduct them in such way. Perhaps MECCSSA can think of some future policy that would prevent this. I would appreciate not being copied on all these emails and if that's not possible, please take me off the list. Thank you to Mr Alan Dodd to raise this issue.

To whom it may concern

I have enjoyed the MECCSA list for several years and have always found it to be a useful list for keeping up to date with te latest debates and publications.

Unfortunately I think that this list is not the appropriate forum for such discussion as has been seen recently, which has now become extremely personal towards some contributors.

I wish to unsubscribe from the list. This is unfortunate but unless this discussion is forcibly stopped by the list owners/moderators immediately I am left with no other choice. I note that previous warnings have gone unheeded.

I apologise for sending this everyone but I am unsure who should receive this.

Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Nazi propaganda during Hitler's reign, once said, "Lie, lie, lie until people believe in you, then lie, lie, lie until you believe yourself."

On 31 Jul 2014, at 01:27, Elina Bardach-Yalov <[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>> wrote:

I guess that's the main problem - you guys ignore questions and tend to misunderstand and misrepresent your opponent (and also use the same old propaganda messages that were invented in good old 48). Now I am about to write that I have never apologized for working with Netanyahu and you will write: "you see, you were working with a criminal and you can't even apologize for that" (or any similar nonsense). And all this just in order to avoid answering my simple question: do you support HAMAS who's ideology is to target Israeli civilians (and use Gaza civilians as human shield, but lets put this aside).

Great point!

This "personal" thing you are talking about - i.e. Israeli operation against HAMAS terrorists, which from your perspective I should condemn ( and for me is absolutely justified. I am sorry for civilian casualties, but I definitely support the government for trying to get rid of terrorists).

But as this is also personal for me (since I am the one to sit in the bomb shelter) I am wondering if you support HAMAS for targeting Israeli civilians or are you (and please leave aside this stupid Arabic propaganda - there is no other way of getting rid of these bloody Zionists, who occupied our land, since we are not Europeans and we both know that two state solution is possible) progressive enough to realize that targeting civilians (not by mistake, but absolutely deliberately) is immoral and wrong?

Hi All,

I’d like to share some of my thoughts on this issue.

- The “personal” matter

I believe that many of us agree with Lisa that personal attacks are not welcomed here. But how can exchanging ideas and discussing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in which media plays a major role be considered as a personal attack. I find that disagreement with Elina point of view, which I find it a practical use of the Israeli government talking points, is so legitimate. Using this “personal attack” logic I can say, as a Palestinian that I consider Elina’s justification of murdering more than 1300 of my people in Gaza a very personal attack.

- Social Media vs Mainstream Media

This Israeli war on Gaza proved again that social movements and activists around the globe are using social media platforms and alternative media very well to get their message received by wide audience and for organising off line/on ground activities. #GazaUnderAttack and #IstandwithGaza hashtags which went viral on Twitter are examples of how people are using social media to tell stories that mainstream media aren’t telling their audience.

Protesters who went on streets of London and other cities in the UK to protest the BBC coverage of the conflict made #BBCtruth4Gaza hashtag very popular on Twitter, while online users stormed the US based channel ABC with complaints for misleading viewers by using a picture of bombing victims in Gaza claiming that it’s an image from Israel. Consequently the channel had to apologize later for misinforming viewers . These are examples of how online and offline activism are coupling and contributing to the failure of Israel war propaganda.

Further reading on this can be found here:

http://mondoweiss.net/2014/07/telegenic-israels-crumbling.html

- Israeli press complicity

If any of you is looking for a professional and non-biased coverage of the war on Gaza in the Israeli media, I tell you it would be a hard task. In any war that Israel declares on Palestinians or Lebanon, the so called free Israeli press would become part of the Israeli war media machine. Except for Haaretz which is left oriented newspaper, most of the Israeli media outlets cover the war from the far right Israeli government perspective. Even Haaretz coverage of this war is biased, as the newspaper failed so far to report the war professionally. This shouldn’t be surprising if we learn that according to recent polls, 87% of Israelis support Netanyahu war on Palestinians.

- Ashdod/Asdod

One last issue I wanted to mention here is about Ashdod/Asdod that Dr. Elina Bardach-Yalov told us she lives in. Ashdod is the Hebrew name of a Palestinian village called in Arabic “Asdod” whose people were forced by the Zionists militias in 1947-1948 to leave and take refuge in Gaza strip. So in 2014, Palestinians of Asdod who are now refugees for more than 65 years in Gaza are asked by those who took their homes by force in 1948 to not resist at all and accept being murdered silently.
