We've recently made the decision to separate out our e-book records and printed book records. They've been merged for the last few years because we thought it would be more user-friendly for students, but due to increasing technical problems with this arrangement we've started the process of separating them. We've decided to have one record for our printed books and one record for our e-books no matter how many providers we take the e-book from (so, if we take the e-book from both Elsevier and Ebrary, the links would both be on the same record). This latter decision, coupled with our ordering and receipting workflow means that we still need some overlaying processes in place whenever we load new e-book marcs into the catalogue.
However, since I've started the separation process, I've found that some e-books in any new e-book marc files that I load into out catalogue (Sierra) are overlaying the print record instead of the e record. This is because many e-book providers include the print ISBN in their e-book marc records. On further investigation, it looks like our system uses the first ISBN in the record to take as a match point which is sometimes the printed ISBN, and sometimes the eISBN. There doesn't seem to be any standard format for records to take and we buy e-books from many different providers who all do different things, so finding a different field to match on isn't really an option either.
I'd have thought that keeping e and print separate was the norm so there must be people who are managing this successfully. Can any of you make any suggestions or let me know how you get round this?
Many thanks
Erica
