Rob,
The BM definition of base silver can be seen at: http://collection.britishmuseum.org/resource/thes/x10364 and we use the same definition for PAS and Nomisma.org
The term refers to a coinage metal consisting essentially of silver and copper, with silver typically in the range 10-30%. For Greek and Roman coins historically referred to as billon or base silver, enter 'base silver' in Description, 'silver' in Materials and 'base' in Materials Comment. 'Billon' is particularly associated with the coinage of medieval and early modern Europe, where it formed a recognised third level of currency, alongside gold and fine silver, used for low denominations. It is also known as 'black money' and 'base-silver'. From the 16th century it came to be replaced by copper coinage, but did not disappear completely until the 19th century.
Hope that helps?
Dan

Rob,
I briefly read up about medieval and post medieval coins a while ago and it doesn't ring a bell, but I think it probably refers to any silver coins below the 92.5% Sterling standard including pre c.1300 English, continental and Roman coins (the later are often well below 92.5% - my University did a fair bit of research into low purity precious metal Roman coins, it's astonishing what levels of debasement the Empire ended up with!)

Subject: Base Silver Coins
Hi,
I was wondering if someone could define base-silver for me (used in the context of coinage) please. I’m guessing that it refers to silver coinage with a very low silver content, but would appreciate any confirmations/clarifications etc.
Thanks and best wishes
Rob
