Candidates are invited to submit their applications for research studies in Musicology. The starting date of the programme is on January 2015.

We are seeking a doctoral student to join our research study programme in Musicology. The doctoral project will help to develop and strengthen our research on Aesthetics, Culture and Media (ACCLAIM), which explores how culture and societal norms and values influence people's use and experiences of music. This specific doctoral project will be linked to an existing senior research project on music and gender. The research scope is quite broad, however applicants might want to address one, or a combination, of the following in their proposal:

• how specific music scenes are gendered
• gender and music education
• music use and the reproduction of gendered inequalities
• gender and the music industries
• music and cross cultural gender differences

The project should aim to address questions around how music use, performance or consumption is negotiated through interpersonal or social relationships. We would also encourage candidates to think about both how music can inform us about gender but also how gender can be used to analyse music. In the research programme, mandatory courses are in Swedish. Seminars, examinations and supervision are in both Swedish and English. The doctoral dissertation is in English.

The programme
The opening is for research studies concluding with the Degree of Doctor. The programme comprises 240 credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study.

Entry requirements and selection
For admission to research studies, applicants are required to meet general and specific entry requirements. In addition, they shall be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements, refer to the admissions regulations as well as to annex 2 to the general syllabus for the subject.

General entry requirements
Alt A. An applicant meets the general entry requirements if he/she, before 1 July 2007, has completed an undergraduate programme of at least 120 credits (corresponding to three years of full-time study) under the old Swedish higher education system.

Alt B. An applicant also meets the general entry requirements if he/she
1. has been awarded a qualification at the Master’s level,
2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits (four years) of which at least 60 credits (one year) were awarded at the Master’s level, or
3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
An applicant with credits or qualifications from undergraduate programmes under the old Swedish higher education system corresponding to the entry requirements under B1 and B2 above will also be eligible. The university may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements under B1-B3 for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds.

An applicant meets the specific entry requirements for research studies in the subject if he/she has Master's degree in Musicology or Music Education. An applicant who has acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meets the specific entry requirements.

An applicant with credits or qualifications from undergraduate programmes under the old Swedish higher education system corresponding to the entry requirements in the previous paragraph will also be eligible.

The assessment whether the applicant has such ability in other respects to benefit from the programme shall be made based on prior courses and programmes taken by the applicant, on other previous activities, as well as on the essays and other independent projects of a scholarly nature that have been submitted by the applicant.

In selecting between applicants, their ability to benefit from the programme shall be taken into account and the selection shall be made based on the selection criteria laid down by the University, see annex 2 to the general syllabus for the subject. If applicants are found to have equal qualifications, preference will be given to applicants of the underrepresented sex. The term underrepresented sex here refers to if and when the share of either female or male students enrolled on the subject area’s research study programme amounts to less than 40 per cent.

Doctoral studentship
The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship. Duties may include teaching, research or administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time working hours. If this is the case, the working hours spent on such duties will be added on to the four-year study period. The assignment require high presence at School of Music, Theatre and Art.

An application for admission to the programme is by default also an application for a doctoral studentship.
