Policy makers, funders, clients and the public are becoming
increasingly focused on the need for research to create "impact". This
often takes the form of asking researchers to anticipate and
articulate who will benefit from their research and in what ways. This
fits with the tradition in HCI of focusing on creating positive
societal change. However, it is less clear what the meaning of
"impact" is within HCI, how best to create, support, assess it, nor
how to share best practice with other researchers and practitioners.
In this workshop at the 28th British HCI Conference we intend to
address the following areas:
· What is the meaning of impact within HCI projects? How does impact
relate to public engagement?
· How specific or ambiguous should researchers be in defining "impact"?
· What methods and mechanisms can be used to create impact?
· Analyse three HCI projects, examining how they created and managed impact
· Focusing on the UK Research Council's Pathways to Impact,
considering the completeness of the graph and example methods that
could create impact for each pathway in HCI oriented projects
· Fostering a community around creating impact and encouraging the
sharing of best practice
We welcome practitioners and academics with an interest in this topic
to submit a personal statement and workshop cards by email to
[log in to unmask] by the 14th July in order to participate in this
one-day workshop. The format of the submission can be found on the
workshop website
(http://impacthciworkshop.wordpress.com/submissions/). The documents
will ask you to answer a series of questions around your background
and any impactful activities you may have taken part in.
If your submission is accepted, you will be expected to attend and
register for the full-day workshop. Participants should note that they
do not need to register for the full conference in order to attend
this workshop. Please contact the organisers at [log in to unmask]
if you have any questions.
