RF Hunnisett, Indexing for Editors, 2nd Edition, 2014
The classic text, Indexing for Editors, by the late Roy Hunnisett, first published in 1972, has long been out of print. A second edition has now been published by the British Records Association in its Archives and the User series, edited by Dr Nat Alcock.
The new edition includes the full original text, with its meticulous attention to the detail of person, place and subject indexes, and its consideration of further aspects of index preparation, including punctuation, cross-referencing and typography.
For this edition, Dr Nat Alcock has added an entirely new chapter, explaining straightforwardly how word-processing and spreadsheet programs can assist in the compilation of indexes.
While Roy Hunnisett’s text was aimed particularly at the indexing of historical record publications, the procedures described are just as valuable for indexing name-rich historical books of all kinds, so the new edition of this hard to find guide will be of great value to a wide range of editors, indexers, cataloguers, scholars and authors.
The book is now available through the British Records Association, Finsbury Library, 245 St John Street, London EC1V 4NB (0207 833 0428; info@british recordsassociation.org.uk; http://www.britishrecordsassociation.org.uk).
