Work experience cataloguing placement at Heatherwick Studio in King's Cross, London
1 day per week for 3 months. Travel expenses and lunch allowance provided
Established by Thomas Heatherwick in 1994, Heatherwick Studio is recognised for its work in architecture, urban infrastructure, sculpture, design and strategic thinking. Today a team of over 140, including architects, designers and makers work from a combined studio and workshop in Kings Cross, London. The studio’s work includes a number of nationally significant projects, including the award-winning UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the Olympic Cauldron for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the New Bus for London.
The studio’s Archivist is responsible for managing and caring for an archive comprised of objects, ephemera, models, prototypes and 2D material and for a collection of objects acquired by Thomas Heatherwick over the course of his career, displayed around the studio space. Over the next few months this existing collection will be supplemented by a large number of fascinating objects collated by design lecturer David Usborne which have been the subject of a book and several international exhibitions under the title Object-ivity. You can read about the collection here: http://object-ivity.com/
The Archivist, in collaboration with the studio’s Exhibitions Coordinator, will be responsible for cataloguing each object, adding them to an Access database, packaging those entering the archive and mounting and curating those being added to the studio’s display areas.
We are looking for someone to assist with this project for one day a week, preferably Wednesdays, who has an interest in design and is able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail. The majority of their time will be spent cataloguing the objects and entering information into Access, but other duties may include assisting with packaging and curation and with work that arises in relation to the studio’s main archive of project material. Full training will be provided.
If you are interested in this opportunity please email the Archivist, Alice O’Hanlon, at [log in to unmask] with a CV and short statement by Friday 18 July.
