Postdoctoral statistician, Fixed Term for 3 Years
Salary Range: £27,729 - £30,486 per annum
MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge
The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions for the development and application of statistical methods to biomedical studies. Its goal is to advance understanding of the cause, natural history and treatment of disease, and to evaluate public health strategies.
The Unit is offering an exciting opportunity to join a research group within the "Evidence synthesis for Health" theme. The programme aims to develop statistical methodology for the design, estimation and assessment of models for combining diverse sources of information to answer questions in a number of health related areas.
You will contribute to ongoing work on infectious diseases, developing Bayesian inferential approaches for the estimation of disease characteristics and spread using a multiplicity of data. Challenges include synthesising heterogeneous and biased information, available at different levels of aggregation and potentially arriving in real time. This work involves applications to long standing epidemics such as HIV, as well as new emerging outbreaks and is in collaboration with national and international partners (e.g. Public Health England, Gates Foundation).
You will have a PhD in statistics, or a relevant discipline; computing experience, both of statistical packages (e.g. R) and programming languages (e.g. C, C++); and experience of Bayesian statistics. Experience of Bayesian computation (e.g. MCMC) and of Bayesian inference for disease transmission would be advantageous. You must have good communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers.
