Dear All,
This will be of interest to colleagues based in UK institutions.
I attended the University Council of MOdern Languages (UCML) AGM last Friday in London on AFLS behalf. The AG documents can be found at: http://www.ucml.ac.uk/events/04-07-14.html
A couple of points that may be of interest:
1. the membership fees for instituions will go up to support UCML's increasing lobbying activities, but NOT for learned societies.
2. There are elections for the Wales representative and the French Representative later this month. I have been nominated for the latter by AFLS colleagues in Newcastle and the OU. I am standing against Prof. Diana Holmes (Leeds) and Dr John Mc Keane (Cardiff) so this is no mean feat. Election statements can be found at: http://www.ucml.ac.uk/news/230 and http://www.ucml.ac.uk/news/231. It would be great if AFLS members could support their president and make French Language and Linguistics prominent in UCML.
3. The talks in the afternoon may be of interest to some of you:
- Charles Forsdick presented the AHRC Translatiing Cultures Projet and Ian Lyne the AHRC Open World Initiative.
- Vicky Gough from the British Council spoke about a scheme promoting the acquisition of English by immigrant children in schools
- Vivienne Hurley from the BA did not turn up.
Their PPT should shortly be available on the UCML website.
Best wishes
Emmanuelle
