This is a very exciting opportunity to be part of a new venture between Imperial College London, Public Health England, The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, The North-West London Academic Health Science Network and Cambridge Veterinary School.
This new Health Protection Research Unit, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, aims to become a centre of excellence in multi-disciplinary health protection research. The Unit will carry out research into Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance across four themes:
• Applied data linkage syndromic surveillance and modelling
• Applied Molecular Bacteriology
• Innovations in behaviour change, technology and patient safety to improve infection prevention and antimicrobial use
• Organisational Change, Sustainability and Evaluation
The overarching strategy of the “applied data linkage, syndromic surveillance and modelling” theme is to maximise the utility of existing data collected within the NHS and PHE for analysis and surveillance, to inform applied research, clinical practice, interventions and policy addressing AMR and HCAI, building upon existing collaboration with PHE. This post will directly support this vision, by working with a Research Associate, under the direction of Dr Aylin and Dr Johnson, to develop statistical and mathematical models of risk of infection initially focusing on urinary tract infections, infections due to E.coli, multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria and staphylococci.
You will also work with the HPRU Data Manager and Research Associate to obtain linked NHS data in order to develop and apply models for AMR surveillance, syndromic surveillance for surgical site infection and early outbreak detection. Further work will model the use and application of NHS staff absence (the UK's largest workforce) and illness data for infectious disease surveillance, early alerts, preparedness and improved infection prevention planning.
Importantly, you may also have a “responsive research capacity role” which will require them to address any approved requests from Public Health England for additional research needed to assist them in fulfilling their role to protect the public and improve the nation’s health.
To apply you must have a MSc, or equivalent in Epidemiology, Statistics, Health Services Research or a related numerate subject. You will have competence in at least one statistical package e.g. SAS, proven experience of analysing quantitative data, some familiarity with NHS data and be willing to travel between Imperial College and PHE sites.
