Subject: Cricket waiters
Cricket waiters
Waitresses in black shifts, working shifts
and white-shirted, black-dacked waiters
in restaurants, channelling cricketers.
All action, poise and balance one minute,
before movement arrested, orders taken,
arms shouldered and then ... the waiting
for the next delivery, like batsmen who launch
into strokes, tear off down the pitch, then stop,
pause, before facing up again. Chin to chin.
And in down time, apparent affability reigns.
Unlike in the kitchen which is pure rugby,
full-on elbow grease till the bell rings.
