Abstract
Traffic congestion with frequent "stop & go" situations causes substantial CO2 and black carbon (BC) emissions, which contribute significantly to global warming. Exposure to BC has also important health effects. Intelligent traffic management strategies have the potential to reduce emissions of CO2, BC and other urban air pollutants. The FP7-funded CARBOTRAF project combines real-time monitoring of traffic and air pollution with simulation models for emission prediction in order to deliver on-line recommendations for alternative adaptive traffic management strategies. Within the CARBOTRAF project Imperial have simulated different ITS measures to predict their effects on traffic and CO2 and BC emissions.
This seminar will present the methodology and the simulation results. The aim of the seminar is to analyse the merits of the various procurement methods used such as PPP, BOT, and BOOT for transport projects, to explain their scope of application and to provide a high level comparison. An "off the shelve" approach may be detrimental to the credibility of the procuring authority and to the long term sustainability of the project itself.
About the Speakers
Dr Robin North is Research Fellow in Transport and Environmental Planning and leads the Transport and Environmental Analysis research group at the Centre for Transport Studies. His work is concerned with evaluating the real-world environmental impacts of transport using state-of-the-art monitoring and modelling methodologies. He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology and sits on the US National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board Standing Committee on Transportation and Air Quality (ADC20).
Dr Margherita Mascia has over ten years of experience and a PhD in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). She has undertaken research activities on a number of areas within ITS (e.g. ITS System Architecture, Demand Responsive Transport Systems, e-Call) and traveller behaviour modelling. She had also worked as consultant for Transport for London in the ITS field.
Dr Jun (Simon) Hu is a Research Associate at the Transport and Environmental Analysis group, within the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London. He is a graduate in civil engineering and holds a MSc and PhD degrees in transport engineering from Imperial College London. His PhD work was focused on developing congestion prediction algorithms for vehicle navigation system. His current research interests include vehicle emission monitoring, public transport, in-vehicle navigation system, traffic management, traffic data fusion and traffic micro-simulation modelling.
Next CTS Seminar
Professor Chung-Yee Lee from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (China) will be leading a seminar titled "Ocean container transport: Making global supply chain management effective" at Imperial College London on Wednesday 18 June @16:00.
About the CTS Seminar Series
The CTS seminar series aims to facilitate discussion on current research topics in the transport field. Seminars are held jointly with our colleagues in the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London. They are usually held on Wednesday afternoons at Imperial College London or University College London.
Seminars are free of charge and open to all interested parties.
