Employer Engagement with Government Employment and Skills Initiatives
The Work and Employment Research Unit at the University of Greenwich seeks a talented and motivated candidate for a PhD project entitled ‘Employer Engagement with Government Employment and Skills Initiatives’. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Patrick McGurk, supported by Professor Ian Greer and Professor David Gray. The aim of the project is to investigate the extent and nature of the engagement of private sector employers with government employment and skills initiatives for the unemployed. Drawing on theories of human resource strategy, labour market segmentation and/or job quality, the project will contribute a much-needed analysis of employer behaviour with respect to involvement in welfare-to-work and related programmes. Employing a comparative case study research design, the project will seek to analyse: i) the main characteristics of engaged employers; ii) the strategic conditions under which they engage; and iii) the actual outcomes of engagement for stakeholders, including managers and staff at firm-level.
Bursary available: £13726 per year for 3 years
