The University of East London CASS School of Education and Communities, in collaboration with the School of Psychology (Clinical), and Music Technology are recruiting for a funded PhD (3 yr) research studentship.
Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship in the broad area of Public Pedagogy through a multidisciplinary collaboration between Education, Psychology and Performing Arts funded by the Cass School of Education & Communities<http://www.uel.ac.uk/cass/>. The post will be based in the world leading International Centre for Public Pedagogy (ICPuP) and linked with similarly leading edge research into Community Clinical Psychology and Digital Arts and Media. Our vision is to deliver excellent research that makes a difference to Technology Enhanced Learning, the Psychology of Addiction and Substance Misuse and Digital Media in the local, national and international context. The successful applicant will work in established research groups within the Schools and will become a member of an active and dynamic academic community.
Project Title: Addiction, At-Risk Youth & Digital Media: Development & Evaluation of an Internet Radio Intervention to Reduce Substance Misuse among Excluded and Hard-to-Reach Youth
Director of Studies: Professor Andrew Ravenscroft ([log in to unmask]), Co-Director of the International Centre for Public Pedagogy (ICPuP)
Co-Supervisors: Dr Meredith Terlecki (Clinical Psychology) and Gordon Kerr (Head of Music Technology)
This studentship will be hosted in the International Centre for Public Pedagogy (ICPuP)<http://www.uel.ac.uk/icpup> with direct collaborations with Psychology (Addiction and Substance Misuse) and Performing Arts (Music Technology) to significantly extend an existing research line, “RadioActive101”, supported by Nominet Trust and EC Lifelong Learning projects. These promote the inclusion, engagement, informal learning and employability of disenfranchised groups through internet radio and social media.
The student will perform community action research to facilitate the creation of a substance abuse radio series with the users themselves, following the established ‘emancipatory’ educational model of RadioActive101. This will also be evaluated in terms of its value as an intervention in substance abuse, from the perspective of those directly involved in producing the broadcast and related content (the ‘radio-activists’) and listeners or social media participants.
The Award
The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress and provides an annual stipend of £15,863 (Research Council recommended rate plus £2000 for London costs), payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and research costs. *Applicants from outside the UK/EU are eligible to apply for the studentship on the understanding that the difference in the cost of tuition fee is payable by the candidate. Current full time UK/EU and International fees are £3,996 and £11,000 respectively.
Requirements
Applicants must have a good honours degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) and/or Masters in a related discipline relevant to the research project (eg. Psychology, Technology Enhanced Learning, Education, Public Health, Digital Arts, etc.) and appropriate other experience.
