Many thanks to everyone who has replied.
David Kernohan:
BT employees gaining recognition for learning through FutureLearn would be a great example. They would be perfect candidates for the interview phase of the study. Any idea how I might be able to access some real cases here?
Pat Lockley:
- ACCA example is fantastic - thank you!
- "We also had students use our MOOC for credit at other unis (they accredited our course)" - which MOOC was that? And do you know which institutions accredited it?
Patrina Law:
Mozilla Badge Alliance contact - many thanks!
Joe Wilson:
Thanks for info about Borders College - great example.
Martin Hawksey:
We're looking specifically for recognition of non-formal, open learning which seems to be harder to find examples of than RPL in general terms. Thanks for the Ruth Whittaker/Glasgow Caledonian lead - will follow up with her.
Simon Thomson:
Do you know of any cases at Leeds Met where a student has received recognition for non-formal, open learning? (As opposed to the more typical scenario of receiving recognition for informal learning through life experiences?) Or is there someone I could speak to who deals with APEL and might know?
Thanks again everyone for the helpful info. Further thoughts/ suggestions are still welcome if anyone else wants to add.

At Leeds Met we call it APEL
This is taken directly from our regs and would include MOOCs etc.
B9.1.3 Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) APEL is the process for assessing, recognising and/or awarding credit for learning that has been achieved through experience and/or training that has not been certificated or formally assessed.

This sounds like Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) which a number of institutions pro-actively support. For example, you might want to check out the work Ruth Whittaker does at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Hi everyone
I am working with colleagues at the ILI, Leicester, on a study linked to the EU-funded OpenEdu<http://is.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pages/EAP/OpenEdu.html> project. The aim of the study is to try to identify practices taking place with regard to the recognition of non-formal, open learning, for example a MOOC learner having a certificate or badge recognised by a HE/ Vocational institution or an employer. If anyone knows of any such initiatives or examples anywhere in Europe, I would very much appreciate it if you could reply to me on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
Any pointers towards reports, blog posts or other mentions of such recognition on the Web will be helpful. We also plan to interview a handful of people (learners, faculty from HE/ vocational education institutions, and employers) over the coming months in order to find out how recognition of non-formal, open learning is happening in practice. Any help in identifying possible interview candidates will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
Gabi
