How should we study the social context of suicide and self-harm? with Professor Jonathan Scourfield
12.00 - 2pm 0.85 Glamorgan Building, SOCSI, Cardiff University CF10 3WT
This presentation will be framed by debates about the methodology of suicide research which are well-known within sociology. Professor Scourfield will argue for a dual paradigms approach and provide examples with reference to several studies on the social context of suicide: documentary research with coroners' records; interviews and focus groups with young people; and measurement of social media communication. Jonathan Scourfield is Professor of Social Work in Cardiff School of Social Sciences and has an extensive publishing portfolio in suicide research, social work and child welfare.

Workplace Culture in Older Peoples' Care
with Prof Kelly and Dr Jones (School of Healthcare Sciences) and Eleanor Johnson (SOCSI)

The care of older people, and the potential for their abuse and neglect, has become a prominent concern in recent years. This seminar will focus on work place culture, how this might contribute to care or neglect, and how those within the system manage their professional concerns. Professor Kelly and Dr Jones will discuss their qualitative research, recently published in Sociology of Health & Illness, exploring whistleblowing and workplace culture. Eleanor Johnson will talk about her ethnography of older people's care and her experience working as a care assistant.
