Three year, full-time PhD Studentship in the Faculty of Health and Life
Sciences, Oxford Brookes University
Title: Optimising breast cancer follow-up care: a mixed methods study of
supported early discharge
Traditional breast cancer follow-up services where patients attend hospital
outpatient clinics for several years offer little, if any, proven clinical
benefit. Furthermore as the number of cancer survivors continues to grow
they are no longer sustainable. Oxford University Hospitals Trust is
introducing a new system of supported early discharge for women with breast
cancer. Under this system, women are discharged from hospital six months
following the end of primary treatment, following preparation for discharge
in a nurse-led appointment, and with a telephone triage system in place for
rapid re-access to the hospital if required. However, this new arrangement
is very different to the previous system of regular hospital-based follow
up for several years. The main aim of this studentship is therefore to
explore the strengths and limitations of supported early discharge, and to
identify the characteristics of women who do well and those who may need
greater support.
The student will join the Department of Clinical Health Care’s research
group and will be part of the Community and Health Sciences Doctoral
Programme which supports a multi-disciplinary group of PhD students
conducting projects in the health field more widely. The Department has
good links with the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Oxford Health
Foundation NHS Trust and the relevant Thames Valley Clinical Networks. Dr
Bernadette Lavery, Oxford University Hospital Trusts will act as clinical
advisor to this study. Supervisors will include Professor Eila Watson, who
has a background in health services research, has a long-standing interest
in cancer care research and has published widely in this area, Professor
Mary Boulton, a medical sociologist with a specific interest in cancer care
and Dr Lavender, a Senior Lecturer in Cancer Care, with a cancer nursing
background.
