ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM is an advanced seminar which will take place in Oporto during the 14-16 of July.
It is deeply related to the KISMIF International Conference, being concerned with the possibility of debating in depth some key theoretical and methodological questions with world-renowned investigators in the field of urban music scenes. Asides from it’s promoters, Andy Bennett and Paula Guerra, the seminar, which will take place in the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto, will have the presence of George McKay, Michael Azzerad and Will Straw, among others.
One of the main objectives of this seminar is to explore the concept of contemporary music scene, understanding it’s dynamics and the challenges to the geographical, historical and social contexts, as well as including the exploration of the most recent cultural politics towards urban music scenes.
The seminar will take the form of a dialog, with the sharing of experiences by all involved, and will figure moments of experimentation, documentary screenings for further discussion with its’ makers, as well as tours of art galleries, bars, and key locations of the Oporto music scene. These will be promoted by musicians, filmmakers, designers and illustrators, which will share their visions, unravelling their processes and creative practices. At the end of the seminar, all participants will be challenged to share their own projects and researches, discussing and integrating the seminar’s content.
Besides FLUP, this seminar will also take place in other vital city places, like Passos Manuel, Maus Hábitos, Galeria Dama Aflita and the Matéria Prima Record Shop.
