Dear Maths-Prom,
Katie Steckles and I have been working under a commission from the FMSP on a podcast project. The aim is to encourage students uptake of Maths and Further Maths at A-Level. Each episode takes a mathematical topic, chews it over, talks to someone using that piece of maths in their work and gives a related puzzle.
The first episode of 'Taking Maths Further', officially released today at the MEI Conference, is about conditional probability and we talk to CSI/forensics lecturer Emma Rixon. Overall, there will be twenty episodes. Based on those we have recorded interviews for, future episodes will include a a variety of topics on and off the A-level syllabus and interviews with a neuroscientist, an archaeologist, a graphene biologist, a structural engineer, a mathematical modeller, a games developer, a radar engineer, a research mathematician, an astrophysicist and a CERN physicist.
