Subject: Developing Digital Literacies for a Digital World ALISS AGM 11th June

ALISS AGM 2014
Developing Digital Literacies for a Digital World
June 11th, 2- 4.30pm.
This year the 2014 ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information Workers in the Social Sciences) http://www.alissnet.org.uk AGM will be held on June 11th at Senate House in the Torrington Room http://www.senatehouseevents.co.uk/conferences It will focus on the theme of developing digital literacies. There is an increasing recognition that in the 21st Century there is a need for everyone to be digitally literate - to possess the capabilities essential for living, learning and working in a digital society. This afternoon event will discuss the nature of the need and how it might be addressed by information professionals
The three speakers will focus on different aspects of the issue and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion.

  * Dr Charles Inskip will report on the Rilads Project http://rilads.wordpress.com/ which has been examining the delivery of digital information literacy skills in UK Higher education.
  * Sally Patalong will provide insight into the digital fluency initiative at Coventry University- a practical project to upskill the library staff
  * Beth Clark and Victoria Bird will discuss their work in preparing, delivering and promoting digital literacy training for trainee Graduate Teaching Assistants at SOAS
The afternoon will begin with the AGM followed by the main presentations and mid-afternoon refreshments.
It will end at approximately 4.30pm

This event is free to all ALISS members.

Non-members may attend at a fee of £20.00 but may not vote during the AGM

2. 20 p.m. "Reflecting on digital scholarship competences", Dr Charles Inskip.
Dr Charles Inskip is a full time lecturer on UCL's MA Library and Information Studies programme. He is a member of the CILIP Information Literacy Project Board and has worked as an academic liaison librarian, as well as in public libraries and special collections. His current research, 'RILADS', in collaboration with Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) and Research Information Network (RIN) examines the delivery of information literacy and digital scholarship in UK Higher Education.
3.00 Tea/ Coffee.

3.15 “Start with the Staff”, Sally Patalong.

Sally is a Subject Librarian and former Teaching Fellow at Coventry University. In April 2013 she was part of a pilot group, devising and delivering an in-house digital literacy programme for library staff. Aware that the University was attempting to address digital literacy for students as part of the Learning and Teaching Strategy, library staff felt that their own skills needed to be improved to enable them to keep pace with, and help the students. The second cohort has just completed the course and it is currently being reviewed.

3.45 Information Literacy for researchers at SOAS

Beth is Head of Electronic Services and Deputy Head of Teaching and Research Support at SOAS.
Vicky has been Subject Librarian for the Economics, Politics, Finance & Management subjects at SOAS since May 2012, having previously worked at the University of Reading.

As part of the Information Skills Group, Beth and Vicky have developed a training session which runs as part of the Professional Development in Higher Education Programme, an HEA accredited course, aimed at new lecturers and Graduate Teaching Assistants working at SOAS. The session aims to develop understanding of information literacy and its importance for students. It is focused on providing help and support in the development of good practice solutions to the development of these skills. Beth and Vicky will discuss how this session came about, the broader aims and activities within the session, some of the problems that they encountered, and how things are shaping up.
