Subject: The Representation of Disabled Women in Advertising
Hello,
Would anyone be able to advise on Anglophone advertisements (that is, UK, US and Canada) that feature disabled women? I am wondering whether there may be any databases which would prove useful? I am very interested in this area of research, however, it is proving tricky to find a substantial volume of advertisements!
Also, if anyone could offer any pointers to articles that focus upon disabled women's engagement with advertisements representing disability I would be very grateful.
Many thanks,
Ella.

Subject: Qualitative Research Methods courses at University of Oxford
* Apologies for any cross-posting *
The Health Experiences Research Group, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford is offering the following programme of qualitative research methods courses September to December 2014. Note that in addition to our one week Qualitative Research Methods (QRM) course, our shorter courses in Interview Skills, Analysis, and Focus Groups, we are also offering a new course in Secondary Analysis.
Our courses are very popular so please book early to avoid disappointment. For further details about each course or to make a booking, please go to
https://www.oxforduniversitystores.co.uk/browse/product.asp?catid=165&modid=5&compid=1
Please pass the information on to anyone who might be interested and/or display it on your noticeboards.
We look forward to welcoming you and your colleagues on one or more of our courses in 2014.
INTRODUCTION TO QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS
17-21 November 2014 FILLING FAST - JUST 7 PLACES REMAINING
"This has been a fantastic week, an excellent combination of theory and practice. I feel much more confident to go back to work on my project. This should be an example to others of how to run a course. Excellent.
This one week course is aimed at health professionals, researchers, and postgraduate students with little or no understanding of qualitative research methods. Everyone is welcome, regardless of research background. The course aims to provide hands on practical experience of different qualitative methods including in-depth interviewing, focus groups and ethnography, as well as practice in analysing qualitative data. It is particularly suited for people who are starting work on a project with a qualitative dimension, doctoral students at the beginning of their projects or those who are thinking about using qualitative research methods. The course also provides a useful introduction/refresher for researchers, academics, or managers who are supervising students or staff doing qualitative research projects.
INTRODUCTION TO QUALITATIVE INTERVIEWING
17-18 September 2014 BOOK NOW
"The course has been fantastic! Many thanks for the clear and useful teaching - handouts, clips. All instructors were enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. Really brought qual methods to life. The experiential work was especially useful."
This two-day course is aimed at researchers and postgraduate students who have little or no experience of qualitative interviewing. Previous courses have attracted researchers from the health service, clinicians and social scientists, though anyone keen to improve their interview skills is welcome. The only requirements are an interest in qualitative interviewing and the desire to conduct better interviews. The course aims to provide hands on practical experience of different qualitative interviewing skills.
INTRODUCTION TO FOCUS GROUPS
3 October 2014 BOOK NOW
"I go on a lot of training courses. This was one of the best I have been to! So rarely do you get practical experience whilst training. Excellently structured and facilitated course."
This one day course is aimed at health professionals, researchers and postgraduate students who want to develop skills in organising and facilitating focus groups and in analysing focus group data. The course is suitable for those with little or no understanding of focus group method as well as those wishing to review and broaden existing skills. Practical exercises and small group work will be used throughout the course to develop competence in designing topic guides, moderating focus groups and analysing data.
ANALYSING QUALITATIVE INTERVIEWS
16-17 October 2014 BOOK NOW
"Overall, really really excellent. So worth my time and energy and I feel energised and inspired to tackle my qualitative analysis with much more confidence in my abilities, than before I came on the course."
This two day course is aimed at researchers who are planning to undertake or manage qualitative research using in-depth or semi structured interviews or those who have already collected qualitative interview data which they are unsure how to analyse. It aims to introduce the principles and practice of qualitative interview data analysis, with particular emphasis on thematic analysis techniques. It uses a combination of practical workshops, group discussions and formal lectures. The course will also give an overview of other approaches to qualitative analysis.
SECONDARY ANALYSIS
25 November 2014 NEW COURSE - BOOK NOW
Secondary analysis uses existing data to investigate new research questions. This one day course, run by the Health Experiences Research Group (HERG), aims to introduce participants to the principles and practice of using secondary analysis. The course uses a combination of practical workshops, group discussions and formal lectures.
Note that this is NOT an introductory course in qualitative analysis. Participants should have experience in qualitative research methods and analysis.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES CELEBRATE ROLE OF SPIRITUALITY IN SPORTING PROWESS
12 JUNE, LONDON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gold Olympic Medalist, Jason Gardener MBE, is one of a group of Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic medalists who will gather in London in June for a unique conference to explore the relationship between spirituality and sport.
Organised by The Kairos Forum, which specialises in issues related to intellectual or Cognitive Disabilities the one day “Spirit in Sport” Conference will be held on 12th June 2014 at the historic Charterhouse, London.
Cristina Gangemi MA, co-director of The Kairos Forum said: “Jason Gardener is one of the most decorated sprinters in British history. We are absolutely delighted that he joins us to share his riveting account of his journey in sport and share very real insights into how mind, body, spirit and faith are truly united.”
Key note speakers at the event from across the sporting spectrum include Jason Gardener MBE, Silver Paralympic Medalist, Stefanie Reid and Gold Special Olympic Medalist, Peter Loftus will lead presentations, conversations and ideas for how sport can be a catalyst for living well in both society and church. The day will build on the legacy of the Olympics and Paralympics of London 2012 and comes in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Stefanie Reid, GB Silver Medalist at the 2012 Paralympics said: "You are venturing into new territory when you start examining the role of theology in elite sport. My faith should impact every aspect of my life, but what does that look like in practical terms in my sport? It is a difficult question, but one that I am excited to discuss with other leaders in faith and sport at this event".
The day aims to inspire those who attend and also equip them for when they return to their place of work and communities to encourage anyone of any ability to celebrate the expression of their spirit through participation in sport at all levels.
The conference is open to anyone to attend and everyone is very welcome. It is likely to be of particular interest to those working and participating in the field of education, the caring professions, pastoral care and sports.
This is a unique opportunity to discuss the connection between spirituality and all aspects of sport and how it is lived out through personal experience. Leading academics in the field of intellectual disability will also be presenting, including Professor John Swinton from the University of Aberdeen. For more information and to book a place at the Conference, please go to thekairosforum.com/content/spirit-sport
