Our confirmed keynote speakers are:
Emeritus Professor Keith Allan (Monash University, Australia), speaking on racial slurs in ‘Pulp Fiction’
Professor Don Kulick (University of Chicago, USA), speaking on erotic talk in the Papua New Guinea rainforest
Professor Phil Hubbard (University of Kent, UK), speaking on the spatialisation of sex work
The Centre for Intercultural Mediation, Durham University and the Department of Interpreting and Translation, Alma mater studiorum, University of Bologna jointly organize this interdisciplinary conference that seeks to explore issues related to taboos as diverse as sex, sexuality and nudity to disability, sickness and death, showcasing research into linguistic, cultural and societal taboos and their reinforcement/debasement from intra- and inter-cultural perspectives. The speakers presenting are from diverse yet connecting fields , including anthropology, ethnography, sociology, language studies, literary studies, linguistics, translation studies and others.
