Dear Colleagues

I agree with Jane. Our profession thrives despite very little resource because of the very collaborative approach to how we work. We share experience, knowledge and encouragement (just as important as the other three). In so doing we maximise the resources available to the sector as a whole. I have just returned from presenting the UNESCO Memory of the World UK awards which was a pinnacle of collaboration between professionals, an international business (Lloyds Banking Group) and a vital advocacy body (Scottish Council on Archives). These early professionals who are just starting out in their career have every right to take advantage of this network from which we all can dip into and benefit. Furthermore, it has been my pleasure on many occasions to find that that individual student to whom I gave a lecture or to whom I answered a question a few years later is a confident professional giving me the benefit of their experience. We can all learn from each other. The day we stop asking each other questions we are in a lot of trouble.

With warm regards

Elizabeth

> Hi there, over the weekend I have been very tempted to respond to the negative comment submitted on 21st June, but I cant resist any longer as this has really irritated me in the sense that this could easily discourage students from reaching out to their professional network for input, advice, sense checks etc etc. Should we not be encouraging our colleagues with their studying, sharing our knowledge and experience?
> Studying is hard enough and without these great communication tools available for us to use, I for one would have certainly missed out whilst I was studying for my MSC.
> In my experience when I was studying it took a lot of confidence to submit my first posting via listserve, had I recevied a response like the one posted on 21st, I doubt I would have continued to use the tool ever again……………V

The listserv is to engage and support with fellow archivists and records managers, and as someone who has raised a few questions over the years, I hope that open and inclusive purpose will remain. It only takes a second to delete a post which you're not interested in so I can't see it causes any problems.

But we should encourage discussion with fellow professionals, whether experienced (and qualified) or not. As a (hopefully) soon-to-be archives professional myself, I am grateful to be in contact with more experienced members of the community. As a struggling profession, I think it's important we all support each other.
