It serves the same purposes - disambiguation (and identification) of
authors; and the grouping of their work - as it does within academia.
It's already used, for instance, for Wikipedia article subjects and
contributors.

A proposal could be made for one; what's the process for that?
In the meantime, the "CiUrlWork" parameter accepts multiple,
comma-separated URL values, so the creator's ORCID could be incuded,
in the form "http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5882-6823".
