How many of you have an ORCID identifier?
ORCID, the Open Research Contributor ID:
http://orcid.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORCID
is an identifier for contributors (including illustrators and
photographers) to academic papers, journals, websites, and other
publications. It's the equivalent for such people of an ISBN for a
book, or a DOI for a paper. Mine is below.
An ORCID enables us to determine that the Jim Smith who wrote paper A
is the same Jim Smith who wrote paper B, and James T. Smith who wrote
paper C, but not the Jim Smith who wrote paper D. It also allows us to
determine that Jim Smith-Jones is the same author, after a name
change, say on marriage or divorce.
Anyone can create an ORCID at the first URL given above, free, and the
process only takes a few seconds. The ORCID is then theirs for life,
even if they change job or affiliation.
Organisations using ORCID already include Nature Publishing Group,
Cambridge University Press, Wellcome Trust and Wikipedia (I lead the
integration work on Wikipedia).
There is more information on the ORCID website, but I am happy to
answer any questions you might have,
