Although art was one of the earliest "non-classical" subjects to formalise its teaching methods in academies in the sixteenth century, the subject has not been part of the university system for very long. Indeed, some have argued that the nature of art requires open ended teaching methods that do not fit in well with a university-dominated system.
In this conference we invite artists, academics, art lecturers and others with an interest in art education to come together to look at the issue of art in the education system. In particular we are interested in the following areas:
The benefits and problems artist and design face in the university/academy
Open-ended teaching in a closed system
Questions of accreditation and validation in art and design
The cultures of art and design and the cultures of bureaucracy
Counter cultures: the rise of independent and "anarchistic" art and design schools
Historic and contemporary experiences of artists, designers and education
International comparisons
This list is not intended to be exhaustive. It is simply an indication that we wish to gather together artists and art lecturers from around the world to discuss issues relating to being an artist in the education system, and the positive and negative aspects of having art in the higher education system at all.
We are particularly keen to encourage artists working in art education to attend this conference, as we believe there few opportunities for artist-tutors to gather, to share experiences, meet other artist-tutors from other countries and hopefully make useful connections.
As well as the conference sessions, you will have an opportunity to visit some of the stunning historic and contemporary sites of Cyprus, including gems like the mediaeval city of Famagusta, and meet people from Cypriot art and educational institutions.
