Research Associate (Operational Research)
Cardiff School of Mathematics
An exciting joint initiative between Cardiff University School of Mathematics and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) led to the establishment in January 2013 of a modelling unit currently comprising of four post-doctoral research associates. The unit is based within the Health Board’s Centre for Improvement and the Board's Research and Development Directorate. The precise nature of the research work and areas of priority of the modelling unit are set and overseen by a steering group comprising of staff from the Health Board and the University (under the supervision at the University by Professor Paul Harper and Dr Vincent Knight).
Given the high profile success of the unit to-date, and the resulting impact the team has made across a range of research projects, we are expanding the unit by appointing an additional research associate. This person will focus on the Clinical Futures programme, an exciting portfolio of research to assist ABUHB in setting out the future strategy of the care provision for the population it serves, in particular to build and utilise OR capacity planning tools related to the building of a new hospital.
As well as seeking to publish papers resulting from this work, the research associate will assist the unit in developing and delivering appropriate modelling training courses for staff. Within the University there will be an opportunity to support existing taught modules at UG and MSc levels, as well as assisting in the supervision of student projects. They will have office space both within the University and Health Board, and be required to travel to the various ABUHB sites as necessary.
Candidates must have a PhD in Operational Research (OR) or a closely related discipline, and have a strong interest, ideally with some experience, of applying their research to health services modelling.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Paul Harper ([log in to unmask]) or Dr Vince Knight ([log in to unmask])
This is a full time position of 35 hours per week and is fixed term for 2 years.
Salary: £30,728 - £36,661 per annum (Grade 6).
