Seminar on Local Belonging, UCL
Thursday July 17 2014 (1000-1730)
The aim of this seminar is to consider the nature of local belonging. The starting point for the various contributions is that local belonging continues to matter to most people; that it can have individual and collective dimensions; that the notion of a binary opposition between a cosmopolitan outlook and local attachments is unhelpful, but that scales at which we belong may be multiple and changing. Belonging occurs in an intersectional context and is linked to local and regional identity. The contributors to the seminar come from a range of disciplines and use a range of methods to explore these issues. The aim of the seminar is to find shared concerns and common ground.
Speakers include:
John Tomaney, UCL: “Parochialism – a defence”
Mike Savage, LSE: “Elective belonging”
Jane Wills, QMUL: “Politics and place”
Patrick Devine-Wright, Exeter: “Place attachment: a form of belonging and a useful way of conceiving 'NIMBY' responses to change”
Paola Briata, Politecnico, di Milano: “Acquired for development by… The Young Generation and East London”
Iqbal Hamiduddin, UCL: “Building, Dwelling, Thinking in Vauban, Freiburg”
Sophie Yarker, Newcastle: “Understanding the characteristics of local belonging: Comfort, commitment and critical distance”
Edgar Liu, UNSW: “Companionship, familial relationships and individuality: Sense of (be)longing in multigenerational households”
