TU1204 – People-Friendly Cities in a Data Rich World
The City Sounding Board Working Group (part of the COST
Action People-Friendly Cities in a Data Rich World
(TU1204))
http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/tud/Actions/TU1204
invites you to participate in a Short Term Scientific

4, 2014. The STSMs will take place during the first two
weeks of September 2014.

Lucca is one of the Reference Cities for People-Friendly
Cities in a Data Rich World COST Action, and it is the
focus of the first round of STSMs, the aim of which is to
investigate a citizen-focussed approach within the context
of the digital age. In addition, the STSMs will provide
an opportunity for researchers to engage with the PIUSS
project - for more information, go here:
http://www.piusslucca.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16&Itemid=121.

The City Sounding Board in Lucca will consist of 50 people
including representatives from the following broad
categories: citizens; commerce/businesses; culture; city
administration/institutions/agencies; and, social. More
information about Lucca and the City Sounding Board
Working Group meeting can be found in the attached
briefing note.

There are 5 STSMs to be awarded, one in each of the
following research areas:

• Explore the relationship between the old Inner City of
Lucca [between the walls] and the City of Lucca [outside
the walls].
• Explore the relationship between Phase 1 of the PIUSS
project [20%] and the more commercial subsequent phases.
• Provide an understanding of the urban space network of
Lucca – the hard paved spaces (i.e. the routes and
piazzas), and the green park spaces – including an
explanation how the new spaces in PIUSS [both external and
covered] will relate to this network.
• Provide an understanding and document what happened in
terms of public engagement in the PIUSS project
• Explain the cultural context and group dynamics of the
public engagement component of the PUISS project

SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON STSMs
• A STSM grant is a fixed contribution based on the
requested budget which is evaluated by the STSM Committee.
The grant is for travel and subsistence costs only. It
does not necessarily cover all such expenses.
• The Management Committee of the COST Action TU1204 will
award up to 5 STSMs. The budget will be divided among the
successful applicants (called Grant Holders) in accordance
with COST rules. Successful applicants will receive an
allowance of between €60-90/day and €300 (minimum) for
travel up to a maximum total budget of €2,000.
• After the STSM, the Grant Holder must submit a
scientific report to the Host and to the STSM
Coordinator within 30 days after the end of his/her stays.
Moreover, the Grant Holder must request a signed
acceptance letter of his/her scientific report from the
Host (senior researcher at the Host Institution), which
the Host sends to the STSM Coordinator.
• The STSM grant will be paid after the Grant Holder’s
scientific report and the acceptance letter from the Host
institution have been approved by the STSM Committee. The
Grant Holder must therefore pre-finance costs related to
the STSM (travel, stay, meals).
