Abstract
Travel time has traditionally been perceived as a negative consequence of spatial separation of activities. Based on this paradigm of travel disutility, transport policy-making has remained largely oriented towards minimising travel duration. However, the growing sophistication and portability of information and communication technologies (ICT) have constantly enabled greater range of activities on-the-move with a quality similar to that experienced at conventional activity locations. This has called the traditional duration-minimising orientation into question with potential implications for transport policy-making and investment appraisal methodologies. The current research seeks to develop a microeconomic framework capable of describing such nomadic and multitasking activity-travel behaviour by making use of 2008 UK Survey of Productive Use of Rail Travel-time (SPURT). By estimating the effects of ICT use, sociodemographic and contextual variables on in-travel time use and productivity of travellers, the research contributes towards better informed policy-making in the era of increasingly digitised and flexible lifestyles.
About the Speakers
Mr Jacek Pawlak is a PhD student based in the Centre for Transport Studies, Imperial College London with background in Economics and Geography (UCL), and Transport Studies (Imperial College and UCL). His research is focused on modelling the interactions between adoption and use of Information and Communication Technologies, travel behaviour, and individual productivity from micro, macro (cross-national), and longitudinal perspectives. Additionally, he has participated in a number of research projects involving industrial collaborations with the BMW Group and Cisco.
About the CTS Seminar Series
The CTS seminar series aims to facilitate discussion on current research topics in the transport field. Seminars are held jointly with our colleagues in the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London. They are usually held on Wednesday afternoons at Imperial College London or University College London.
Seminars are free of charge and open to all interested parties.
