In the "Sunday Times" Culture mag today, in a review of book, by the
writer, broadcaster & lecturer Tristram Hunt,"Ten Cities that made an
empire", the reviewer the historian Dominic Sandbrook finishes (p31)
that Hunt cannot resist quoting Kipling's verdict on Calcutta [from
"The City of Dreadful Night" ] " Why, this is London! This is the docks..."
I am impressed that this quote from an early Kipling story is so well known.
