The Community Development Journal, established in 1965, is 50 years
old in 2015. To mark this anniversary, a range of activities are
planned culminating in the publication of a 50th Anniversary Special
Issue in January 2016, edited by Mick Carpenter (University of
Warwick), Akwugo Emejulu (University of Edinburgh) and Marilyn Taylor
(Institute for Voluntary Action Research).
Much has changed since the Journal was launched in 1965 but many of
the same challenges remain, and with them, the potential for community
development theories and practices to address urgent contemporary
concerns. We invite articles that critically engage with community
development as a set of contested theories and practices in order to
reassess its contemporary relevance. Articles should consider whether
community development politics and approaches can help reverse the
tide of neoliberalism and reactionary conceptions of community by
fostering a more socially just and sustainable world. Beyond this, we
have no set ideas about the themes or issues authors should address,
although we would welcome submissions focusing on the relevance of
community development to:
- contemporary economic and ecological crises;
- challenges of population displacement and international migration;
- emerging societies and communities in globalised contexts;
- new possibilities arising from the spread of digital technologies;
- progressive possibilities associated with emerging social movements
linked to any of the above.
