Dear all,
An employee is recently being treated for asthma, though a formal diagnosis has not yet been given. He feels the symptoms are work related. His history suggests that welding and grinding tasks have likely aggravated the symptoms and he has been restricted from any grinding and welding work until he has had further investigations and more information is known about his condition.
I have recently met with a representative who demonstrated a powered air respirator as well as discussing various available masks and PPE for welding and grinding work. The benefit of the powered mask, as he explained, would be that the exposure from welding fumes and grinding dust is minimal / eliminated and the user is able to breathe normally inside the mask without using any extra effort. He has recommended that this type of mask would be suitable for the above employee - who is keen to return to his full role.
Please could you give me your thoughts and advice regarding this type of RPE and whether it is felt that it would offer full protection to the employee and prevent further exacerbation of ongoing (despite restriction) symptoms?
Your responses and valuable knowledge is very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Sarah
