One-Day Symposium
Film After Thatcher: Gender and Sexuality in post-1990 British Cinema
Wednesday 2 July – Liverpool Hope University
Almost a quarter century after her political demise, Margaret Thatcher remains a divisive figure. The contrasting reactions following her death last year revived debates about her pervasive influence among those she allegedly empowered and those she antagonised. The changes brought about under Thatcher had mixed effects for women, unsettled working-class masculinities, and the controversial Section 28 sparked indignation among LGBT communities. Until the 1990s debates about gender, sexuality, and their cinematic representations could not avoid assessing the influence of Thatcherism on British cinema. While the focus has shifted since the 1990s, the changes Thatcherism brought about are still present in post-1990 British cinema. The symposium will offer an opportunity to reflect on the ways films and filmmakers have dealt with gender and sexuality after Thatcher, whether textually or contextually, and consider how framing our debate along these lines might influence scholarship on British cinema.
