Research Fellow - Stories of Change: Exploring Energy and Community in the Past, Present and Future
Salary in the range £28,132 to £30,728 pro rata
This post is for a part time Research Fellow (0.5 FTE / 50%) to be based at the University of Birmingham, School of Geography Earth and Environmental Sciences, to work on a 24 month project supervised by Dr Rosie Day. The post is part of the new AHRC funded project Stories of Change: Exploring Energy and Community in the Past Present and Future. The post commences September 1st 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
‘Stories of Change’ aims to help to revive public and political conversations about energy by looking in a fresh way at its past, present and future. It draws on history, literature, social and policy research and the arts/media to encourage a more imaginative approach to current and future energy choices and seeks to make space to work through areas of concern and explore elements of a collective vision. This position is for a social researcher to work on a sub-project in collaboration with the University of South Wales and with arts practitioners, which will work in and with communities in south Wales to explore how people use energy and live with it in their homes, against a backdrop of socio-economic change related to energy production. We will work to co-create a new set of plural narratives, exploring the change in domestic energy configurations and usage over the life cycle and across generations.
For this post, we are looking for a social researcher with a PhD or equivalent experience in a social science discipline such as sociology, human geography or anthropology, and ideally previous engagement with the social science of energy literatures, or a strong interest in developing work in this area. An openness to working alongside humanities / arts based and creative techniques is required, although experience in arts practice is not necessary for this particular post. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the postholder will be working with the research team, diverse communities and other collaborators. Experience in conducting research interviews and/or focus groups is essential, as are practised qualitative data analysis skills. Although based in Birmingham, the postholder must be able to travel to sites in Wales when necessary and to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
