I am using private photographs taken in 1917-1918 as the material culture of a Royal Air Force campaign in the deserts of Jordan. These images were used to locate the site of an RAF Advanced Landing Ground and will form part of the archaeological record when the site is excavated later this year.
Additionally, these images and a limited number of aerial photographs are being used to theorise about the engagements of the pilots with landscapes.
One book that I have found particularly useful is:
Edwards, E. and Hart, J. (eds.) (2004) Photographs Object Histories; On the Materiality of Images, London: Routledge.
