Dear Subscribers,

KTP ASSOCIATE, Lancaster University (Department of Mathematics and Statistics) and JBA Consulting Ltd
This 2 year post has been created as a result of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Lancaster University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and JBA Consulting Ltd (http://www.jbaconsulting.com/). On completion of a successful project there may be opportunities for on-going employment within the company partner.
The Company:
JBA Consulting (JBA) is a specialist flood risk and environmental engineering consultancy, providing a range of inter-disciplinary services to clients in the government, private, transport and utility sectors. JBA is a wholly-owned part of JBA Group Ltd., which also includes JBA Risk Management Ltd., a specialist firm developing risk assessment data, primarily flood risk maps and analytics, for the insurance, reinsurance and allied industries.
The University:
Lancaster University is the leading research-intensive university in the UK’s North-West. The Statistics group in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is an internationally recognised centre of research excellence. For over twenty years the Group has been at the forefront of the UK research effort in Statistics, establishing a strong track record of theoretical innovation arising from real-world challenge.
The Job:
The project builds on strong existing research links between Lancaster University and JBA. As a KTP Associate you will be employed by Lancaster University, but will be based at JBA, which is located in Skipton, United Kingdom, close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and about one hour’s travel from Lancaster University. You will lead this exciting project which aims to extend and generalise a multivariate conditional exceedance model for environmental extremes relating to flood risk. You will improve on existing prototype applications by including information about rainfall extremes, extending the model to include a broader range of spatial and temporal scales, and also investigating physical constraints on the processes represented by the statistical model. You will work closely with and be supported by academics from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, led by Professor Jonathan Tawn, and the senior management team at JBA. Funding for the post includes the necessary support for regular meetings with Professor Tawn and other Lancaster academics.
The Candidate:
For this post, the ideal candidate is expected to have a PhD in Statistics with some knowledge of extremes. Exceptionally, a strong candidate qualified to a similar level in another numerate science background (e.g. engineering, physics) may be considered, subject to being able to demonstrate a suitable level of expertise in statistics. Experience working with environmental data would be desirable, along with demonstrable ability to write and document scientific software (for example “R” packages) and to manage large data sets. . Additional attributes in a successful candidate will include good project management and team working skills, and a high standard of written and personal communication skills.
Salary will be between £25,759 and £29,837 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The reward package also includes an additional £4,000 personal training and development budget offering excellent opportunities to further your professional development and support your career progression. You will be encouraged to present papers at national and international conferences.
To apply online for this position visit https://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk
The closing date for applications is 9th May 2014 and interviews will be held in Skipton; date TBC.
Informal enquires should be directed to Professor Johnathan Tawn (Lancaster University) Tel: 01524 593965 / Email: [log in to unmask] or Professor Rob Lamb (JBA) Tel: 01756 799919 / Email: [log in to unmask]
