The following research questions will be asked:
(1) What is the extent and what are the trends in inequalities in head and neck cancer survival in Scotland?
- Initially high level for all cancers, then head and neck cancer focus - utilising range of inequalities metrics, over time (historic and possibly projected)
- Potential to evaluate the impact of new Quality Performance Indicators for head and neck cancer
(2) What are the factors which impact on head and neck (and or smoking-related) cancer survival?
Data Sources:
Record-linkage to SMR / Prescribing / second primaries data
Utilising access to head and neck cancer 5000 (prospective) cohort
Exploring further ISD national audits (+linkage)
Statistics:
Various statistical methods will be compared and contrasted, Cox models, Extended Cox models for competing risk, Poisson regression with individual person time as an offset. A simulation study could also be carried out.
Advanced statistical knowledge and skills including programming in a statistical package (e.g. SAS) are essential.
A degree in Statistics, or one with a large statistical content, would be essential.
