Dear PALAns,
Please see below and attached for an announcement from Louise Nuttall, on behalf of the Stylistics & Discourse Analysis Reading Group, University of Nottingham
Best wishes,
Jane
We are pleased to announce that registration is open for 'Real, Ideal or Implied?...The Reader in Stylistics' symposium, sponsored by PALA!
This one-day symposium will take place on Tuesday 24th June 2014, in the School of English at the University of Nottingham. All are welcome to attend this free event but places are limited.
In narratology and semiotics theoretical readers abound, from the perfect reader, superreader, implied, ideal and model reader to interpretive communities and ghosts. As stylistics has evolved, the influence of cognitive and corpus methodologies has prompted discussion of an empiricised reader, while in cognitive poetics a concern for the ‘real reader’ is viewed as central to the effective analysis of literary texts. These different types of reader raise serious questions for the theory and practice of stylistics. Do all of these readers exist? More importantly perhaps, how do we get at them?
This symposium will explore questions such as: What are the relative merits of speculative and empirical accounts? Is stylistic practice enriched or overcrowded by the co-existence of differently conceived readers? How successful are emergent analytic methodologies in accessing the interpretations and experiences of readers?
The day will consist of papers which explore such issues through specific textual analysis. Topics to be covered include:
• Individual and social reading practices (reading groups, social networks and digital reading);
• Empirical methodologies vs. introspective approaches;
• Reading as text-controlled process;
• Genre and reading strategies
To register your place please fill out the RSVP form to be found via the symposium webpage: www.nottingham.ac.uk//CRAL/ResearchGroups/StylisticsSymposium.aspx
Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Further details of the programme and travel information will be posted on the Symposium webpage soon.
In the meantime we look forward to meeting you in June!
