According to Graham West in "Innovation and the Rise of the Tunnelling
Industry" pp237 et. Seq. he says "Brunton machines, including one of 9ft
diameter, were later tried in North Wales, Westmorland and South Wales, but
in all cases the ground was hard rock with the result that the cutter wear
was so great the machines were withdrawn." No reference is given for this -
does anyone have any additional information as to these trials and their
locations? The trials at Snodland and Sangatte are well known. The bores at
Maenofferen and Abercwmeiddau are firmly related to Hunter and Cooke - so
where did Brunton try his machine?
Kind regards
Graham Isherwood
